Liam Howlett and Keith Flint hit out at awards which aren't voted for by fans

04 August 2009 - British rave outfit The Prodigy have slammed the prestigious, for being too industry-based.

Speaking at the 2009 Kerrang awards in London last night, they said it has nothing to do with what the fans want.

"It's got nothing to do with the public," said Liam Howlett. "It's to do with a panel of people that always opt for the most obscure thing."

They were nominated in 1994 forMusic for the Jilted Generation, the year pop act M People won the award.

The band made an appearance at the Kerrang awards to pick up Best Single for Omen.

Having released their fifth studio albumInvaders Must Diein February, keyboardist Liam Howlett laughingly told BBC 6 Music: "I think we should have been nominated this year."Speaking about the annual music accolade, he said: "We never mull it over in our minds."Heavier music tends not to be represented on the Mercury shortlist as much as pop and folk artists."An award thing can, nine times out of 10, be voted for by people that want to feel that they are important within music."Keith Flint

To which Howlett responded: "I think it should be. Why not? Why shouldn't it be? Because that's the type of music that stirs up the emotion. It's what kids listen to."

Frontman Keith Flint was less forthcoming with his comments: "There's a few things that I'm thinking of that I could try and get controversial with, but I'm not going to give that the time."

"I think what's more important to The Prodigy is that, whatever number your album goes in at, or the single, or however many plays it gets, or doesn't get, or awards you get, or don't get; our reward, as a band, is to write the best album we can and then go to Download [festival] and rip it to pieces," he explained.One album, out of a 12-strong shortlist, is awarded with the Mercury Prize each year.

Last year Elbow were crowned victors with their album, The Seldom Seen Kid.

But Flint said it's the awards voted for by the fans which resonate with them.

In light of the Mercurys, he added: "An award thing can, nine times out of 10, be voted for by people that want to feel that they are important within music art or literature, but the Kerrang Awards right here, is voted for by readers.

"That's why we're here, to show the respect for the people that have taken time to vote for us, because they are the people that stand in front of us and buy tickets."

The Prodigy's latest single, Take Me To The Hospital, is due for release on 31 August.

New Blur collection

Britpop band plan re-release of their best tracks before reunion

20 May 2009 - Brit-pop heroes Blur are set to release a re-vamped ‘best of’ double album featuring a mix of tracks from their prolific career.

Midlife: A Beginner's Guide To Blurwill pull 25 tracks from the band’s seven studio albums including Girls & Boys, Sing and Beetlebum.

It’ll also include a re-release of Popscene, not available since it first came out in 1992.

Midlifeis set for release on 15 June so show-goers can prepare to sing along just in time for the band’s planned comeback gigs this summer.

One of the bands hand-picked to support Blur’s much anticipated tour is St. Albans trio Friendly Fires.

They’ll be sharing the stage with them at the Hyde Park gigs and while lead singer Ed MacFarlane is excited, he confessed to 6 Music: “I was an Oasis kid when I was younger.”

McFarlane said Blur asked them directly after seeing them perform: “I think the first time they saw us play live was at the NME awards.

“We had our Brazilian troupe with us and maybe they thought it could work well as a support act so I’m very flattered to be playing with them.”

McFarlane told 6 Music that his memories of the band usually bring up the Oasis-Blur rivalry of the Brit-pop era.

“I think my favourite Blur track is Coffee and TV,” he explained.  “I don’t know why, I just really like the hook and it’s got a laid back atmosphere about it.

“But I think the thing that sticks out in my head the most is Country House and just Oasis not liking them, and me really liking Oasis.”

The reunited band are gearing up for a series of intimate shows in June, before their huge shows in Manchester, London and festival appearances at Glastonbury, T In The park and Oxygen.It’s also rumoured that the quintet are looking to add European and US dates to their reunion tour.Emily Wither

It is not clear why the 27-year-old single mother has quit the series, but she has repeatedly clashed with fellow housemate Sophia Brown.

She also nominated Londoner Brown because "she's slagging people and being non pro-active with things in the house and she can kind of be really aggressive as well".

Beinazir Lasharie was voted off the show on Sunday night.

Possessions that belonged to Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe are to be auctioned in Las Vegas.

Personal effects including Monroe's receipts for alcohol and Presley's pill bottles are among the lots up for sale.

Monroe's bath robe - purported to be the last item of clothing that she wore - has a guide price of up to $6,000 (£3,745) at the auction.

The event, which includes a whole host of celebrity memorabilia, takes place on the 26 and 27 June.

Minutiae

A number of items from Monroe's final home in California, including two bricks from the house and furnishings are also among the lots.

Minogue to tour the US and Canada

Former Neighbours star Minogue had her first hit in 1988

Kylie Minogue is to perform her first tour of North America, she has announced on her website.

The singer, 40, will kick off the six-date tour on 30 September in Oakland, California, wrapping up at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on 11 October.

Minogue's tour also takes in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto.

She has had two top 10 hits in the US with The Loco-Motion, a number three in 1988, and 2001's Can't Get You Out Of My Head, which reached number seven.

"I've wanted to tour in America and Canada for years," Minogue said in a statement on her website.

"I know that fans have been waiting a long time for this and I'm thrilled that the opportunity has finally arrived."

Tickets will go on widespread release on Friday 15 May.

Her only hit US album was Fever, released in 2001, which reached number three.

In Canada, Minogue has had a number one single with Can't Get You Out Of My Head as well as a further three top 10 hits including Slow, which reached number six in 2003.

Last year, Minogue, who has had more than 30 top 10 hits in the UK and has sold millions of records all over the world, was appointed OBE for services to music.

Friendly Fires create euphoria at The Forum

30 April 2009 - Dressed in suit trousers and shirts, the dapper trio took to the stage of Kentish Town’s Forum and were greeted by the rapturous applause of adoring fans.

Friendly Fires are midway through a mammoth, sold out headline tour of the UK and tonight proved their live show is quite deserved of the praise the band has been getting.

In the last year they’ve received an NME Award, the Best Breakthrough Southbank Award, are billed for all of the big festivals this summer and have recently been handpicked to support Blur as part of their comeback tour.

The singer, Ed MacFarlane, admitted before the show they are feeling the burn a bit from so much gigging, but at no point did this show.

His vocals were spot on, as was Jack Savidge’s rhythmic drumming and Ed Gibson’s slick bass playing.

Teamed with a spectacular array of retro disco lights and strobes, punters were treated to a relentlessly thrilling set of unique, classic songs which weaved seamlessly into each other and gave you no chance to stop the bop.

An extra bassist and a brass section, consisting of a saxophonist and trumpet player, further enhanced the sound.

Photobooth incited everyone on stage to partake in a mass jam, as did Climbing On Board, which saw Ed, Ed and Jack temporarily lose their instruments for wood blocks and the like, as the crowd’s rendition of the chorus resounded around the venue.

The gig floor turned into a full on love-in of dancing – and I don’t mean foot tapping with occasional head nods; we’re talking full on, arms in the air, fists of glory, full body moving kind of dancing.Couples were declaring their love, friends were hugging in joy as they jumped up and down and the atmosphere was electric as Friendly Fires weaved their way through a fairly swift set of their debut album tracks.Even the hardest of hearts couldn’t help but be enticed to partake in some hip-shaking, taking the lead from frontman Ed MacFarlane and his Mick Jagger-esque moves.They kick-started the show with Lovesick, and the singer told 6 Music the song has a drop that’s had a significant effect at all their shows.“There are bits of songs that people really react to,” said MacFarlane. “People love the break of Lovesick, the break of In The Hospital, Paris and On Board have been working really well live, and White Diamonds as well.”The band recently toured in Mexico, and the singer told us before the show it was quite overwhelming the reaction they got out there, so many miles from home.“It was very strange to discover that our music has had an impact in a country like that,” he explained. “It was really good. I almost felt like Morrissey for a day. It was quite crazy. I hear that he’s massive in Mexico and it was really surreal.”Paris was the stand out moment. Born in New York in 1940, Phil Spector started his career as a musician before inventing the "Wall of Sound" recording technique and discovering girl group The Ronettes.

Clough family 'should see film'

Michael Sheen stars as Brian Clough in The Damned United

Actor Michael Sheen says he hopes Brian Clough's family will watch his latest film about the late football manager.

The Damned United chronicles the 44 days Clough spent managing Leeds United in 1974 before he was sacked.

But Clough's family have said they will boycott the film as they were unhappy with the book upon which it is based.

"It's a much more affectionate and respectful look at Brian," Sheen said ahead of the film's world premiere in London's Leicester Square.

"I hope they get to see it because I can understand their fears," he added.

"I know they weren't happy with the book but I think the film is a very different animal.

"We felt that any film that was going to be about Brian Clough would have to be something that showed why people had so much affection and admiration for him.

"I think the film does service to that and I hope that if any of the family get to watch it they can make their minds up after that."

Clough, a former England player who died in 2004, found success managing Derby County and Nottingham Forest either side of his unhappy tenure at Leeds.

His son Nigel told BBC Radio Derby that the family would snub the film because the book - which portrayed Clough as the victim of his own ambition - had upset his mother, Barbara.

"I'll go with the principle that if the film is based on the book, we won't be going down the road of seeing it," he said.

Tom Hooper, the director of The Damned United, said that he and screenwriter Peter Morgan had made efforts to get Clough's family involved with the project.

"We invited them to read the script and see an early cut of the movie and the finished film," he said.

"I would have loved to speak to them because what better [way is there to do] research? We definitely wanted to involve them.

"Peter and I were affected by what they felt about the book so it did inspire us to make as rounded a portrait of Brian Clough as we could," he added.

Stars turned out on the red carpet in London for the film's world premiere, including Harry Potter actress Emma Watson and Sir Michael Parkinson, who interviewed Clough on a number of occasions.

Sheen said he thought it unlikely there would ever be another Brian Clough.

"No one ever has or will compare to Brian Clough," he said.

"He was one of the biggest stars we have ever had in whatever he did. He was funnier than anyone else, he was more outrageous than anyone else, had more passion and he had a vision of the game that is unsurpassed.

"You put all that together and you have a complete one-off."

The film goes on general release on 27 March.
