New Blur collection

Britpop band plan re-release of their best tracks before reunion

20 May 2009 - Brit-pop heroes Blur are set to release a re-vamped ‘best of’ double album featuring a mix of tracks from their prolific career.

Midlife: A Beginner's Guide To Blurwill pull 25 tracks from the band’s seven studio albums including Girls & Boys, Sing and Beetlebum.

It’ll also include a re-release of Popscene, not available since it first came out in 1992.

Midlifeis set for release on 15 June so show-goers can prepare to sing along just in time for the band’s planned comeback gigs this summer.

One of the bands hand-picked to support Blur’s much anticipated tour is St. Albans trio Friendly Fires.

They’ll be sharing the stage with them at the Hyde Park gigs and while lead singer Ed MacFarlane is excited, he confessed to 6 Music: “I was an Oasis kid when I was younger.”

McFarlane said Blur asked them directly after seeing them perform: “I think the first time they saw us play live was at the NME awards.

“We had our Brazilian troupe with us and maybe they thought it could work well as a support act so I’m very flattered to be playing with them.”

McFarlane told 6 Music that his memories of the band usually bring up the Oasis-Blur rivalry of the Brit-pop era.

“I think my favourite Blur track is Coffee and TV,” he explained.  “I don’t know why, I just really like the hook and it’s got a laid back atmosphere about it.

“But I think the thing that sticks out in my head the most is Country House and just Oasis not liking them, and me really liking Oasis.”

The reunited band are gearing up for a series of intimate shows in June, before their huge shows in Manchester, London and festival appearances at Glastonbury, T In The park and Oxygen.It’s also rumoured that the quintet are looking to add European and US dates to their reunion tour.Emily Wither

I have just finished reading "teach yourself Marx". I spotted something quite interesting that relates to this song Strawberry. Henry Marcuse was a student and philosopher of the Frankfurt school (A school of Marxist thought) and he wrote the book "One dimensional man". He believed that thought becomes one-dimensional as critical thinking and opposition are leached away by consumerist society. The video shows the band living in mindless repetition. Ahhh there's not enough room for letters..

Saffia walks out of Big Brother

Saffia spent just eight days in the Big Brother house

Saffia Corden has walked out of the Big Brother house just eight days after the Channel 4 show began.

It is not clear why the 27-year-old single mother has quit the series, but she has repeatedly clashed with fellow housemate Sophia Brown.

Scenes of her leaving will be shown on Friday night's show, which will also include the live eviction.

Freddie Fisher, who legally changed his name to Halfwit as part of a task, faces the boot alongside Brown.

Corden, a beauty consultant from Nottingham, left the house after going to the diary room at 2020 BST on Thursday.

Big Brother bosses said her departure would not affect Friday night's eviction.

Fisher and Brown received six votes each when housemates nominated for the first time on Monday.

Dubliner Noirin Kelly was one of those who nominated Fisher saying: "I can't stand the way he talks."

She also nominated Londoner Brown because "she's slagging people and being non pro-active with things in the house and she can kind of be really aggressive as well".

Beinazir Lasharie was voted off the show on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old study support assistant, from London, was booted out after failing to earn housemate status.

I have to admit I liked the album Deus Ex Machinae a lot more than Redeemer or Overworld (although the latter had some good tracks on it, though while Redeemer only was "redeemed" by Elite and Through The Looking Glass).The band itself still is awesome, considering they did their songs in their free time first, and of course since they made the Jets 'N Guns OST.Flagcarrier is just a wonderful ballad, so beautiful. So good and it never gets old~
